Computing ExperienceI am fairly highly experienced in the Java development environment. To a lesser extent, I am experienced in both C and Visual Basic development. I have a high level of experience in developing web based applications using PHP and SQL. As well as software implementation experience, I have a good understanding of programming design and management. I have a high level of practical experience with computer hardware and a good understanding of how the PC works at a hardware level. My computing experience also includes a wide range of topics in less detail, such as security, networking and Linux web server configuration. My university project increased my knowledge of networking extensively and I have a reasonable amount of experience configuring and programming networked applications. |

Personal SkillsI was the course representative for the Software Engineering group, which involved me attending meetings each semester to put forward the views and comments of the other members of the group to the board of lecturers in the computing school. I found this experience valuable as it helped me greatly with skills in large meetings and also in encouraging people to share their views and opinions on a specific topic. |

Efax Ltd, 2 Hookstone Chase, Harrogate, North Yorkshire | 06/04 – 09/05 |
|||||||||||||
Job Description: The work at Efax was extremely varied due to the small nature of the business and the small team of technical staff. The daily job role involved answering technical and support calls for the fax system and other services that were provided. The call volume was quite low, which gave the opportunity for small to medium sized projects to be undertaken. The projects were mainly undertaken using PHP and MySQL and were web based applications, these consisted of creating completely new applications or occasionally editing and improving an existing system. Projects of note would be the completion of an application for the customers to view details of faxes sent and received via the internet. Another project of note would be the fax broadcasting database system that enabled staff members to quickly search for fax numbers against specified criteria, that could then be used for fax broadcasting, this project was undertaken by the entire technical team and was valuable experience in working as a team in industry. Reason for Leaving: The employment was work experience as part of my sandwich degree, so I left to complete the final year of the degree. |

University Project DescriptionThe final year project that I completed was researching ‘Home Network Synchronised Streaming Audio’. This involved conducting research into the area of synchronised streaming audio, proposing methods that would complete the requirements of the project and finally creating an implementation of the project. The server and client implementation were created using Java and the Java Media Framework. The research was successful in creating further understanding of the issues that face developers when developing synchronised audio systems and the implementation section was completed with much success. This project spanned across the entire final year and gave me valuable experience in planning a reasonably sized project, which required ongoing documentation, to a fixed deadline. |

Hobbies and Other InterestsAlthough my main interest is computing I also enjoy many hobbies, these are mainly racquet sports. I have been playing badminton from an early age, and was involved in playing for a local adult team in a league, however since attending university I rarely play due to academic commitments. I also enjoy playing squash and tennis and table tennis for leisure. I was also a member of the scouting movement which I followed from beavers until scouts, this was valuable experience for me as it has prepared me for many things life such as team work, getting along with people and getting the task completed no matter what the circumstances. |

Additional InformationEver since a very young age when I was given my first computer I have been interested in computing, I am constantly trying to improve me knowledge of the computing industry through courses and self learning. I have a broad range of skills in the IT industry and have built many PC’s as well as setting up networks, writing software and performing many technical support issues for friends and family.I also often take on small PHP/MySQL based web projects to extend my knowledge and experience in these technologies. The work usually involves the editing of code used within content management systems, either to create customisations or for the integrating bespoke code. This work has led me into the role of technical administrator on a popular php-nuke based website with over 8400 registered members. The tasks involved with this role are varied, ranging from configuring and maintaining the web server, rebuilding and relocating the website onto new servers, down to ensuring the day to day running of the site is ok and interacting with the members. |
